Capturing a wide array of subjects from genealogy, history of the slave trade to the Civil War and the nature of memory, the Alex Haley collection consists of early outlines and versions of Roots, correspondence about the work’s creation, manuscripts and correspondence regarding other projects.
Alex Haley and his writings had a huge impact on American society by playing an important part in the Civil Rights Movement and sparking pride in African American History.
The collections exist to preserve, and make accessible to our community, rare and unique historical materials. We encourage faculty, staff, and students to use the Haley Collection for research and assignments. For more information and assistance please contact Marilyn Nowlan or Cynthia Hunt.
